Wimbledon 2014: Djokovic Off to a Jump Start, Verdasco Out

Top seed and 2011 champions Novk Djokovic got his Wimbledon campaign off to a winning start with a straight sets win over Andrey Gobulev.

Djokovic claimed a comfortable 6-0, 6-2, 6-4 win over the 54th-ranked player from Kazakhstan, who had lost his last nine matches on grass prior to the encounter at Centre Court.

Sixth seed Tomas Berdych fought back from an opening set loss to securing his place in the second round of the mens singles on the opening day.

Novak Djokovic Sees Off Gorbulev to Reach the Second Round of Wimbledon.

The Czech Republican outlasted Romanias Victor Hanescu 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco lost out 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Australias world number 58 Marinko Matosevic.

There were also wins for 12th seed Ernest Gulbis, 17th seed Mikhail Youzhny and Queens Club champion Grigor Dimitrov, seeded 11th.

Gulbis saw off Estonian Zopp 7-6, 7-5, 7-6, while Youzhny claimed a comfortable win over British number two James Ward 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

Dimitrov also beat Americas Ryan Harrison in straight sets on the back of his victory qt Queens Club last week. He recorded a 7-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over the American.

Andy Murray began the defence of his Wimbledon title with victory over unseeded David Goffin.

Seeded third for this years tournament, Murray received a rapturous reception as he walked on to Centre Court to a standing ovation.

The returning mens singless champion, 27, wasted no time in dispelling the 105th-ranked Belgian 6-1, 6-4, 7-5, to set up a second round match with Slovenian Blaz Rola.

I thought it was a very high standard match, Murray told BBC Sport.

I was glad to finish it in three. Sometimes you can win in three sets and not play that well, but Im pleased with the way I struck the ball.

It victory means Murray has now won his 14th consecutive match at the All England Club.

Vermaelen has seen his playing time limited at Arsenal due to a strong Central Defense pairing of Koscienly and Merteshacker.

Since Robin Vanpersie ditched the NorthLondon club for United, many expected the Belgium to follow suit.

Defender Godfrey Oboabona is back training with Nigeria after an ankle injury.

The 23-year-old Rizespor of Turkey export missed the 1-0 win over Bosnia-Hercegovina because of the injury he sustained during his side’s World Cup opening draw with Iran.

“The medics have given me a clean bill,” said Oboabona, who reportedly sustained a deep cut in his limb but no fracture, following a kick by one his opponents from Iran.

He went through his pace in a separate session away from the rest of the team in Campinas on Monday.
